A CHILD MURDERED.
SHOCKINGLY MUTILATED. ITS MOTHER ARRESTED. (By Telegraph.-—Own Correspondent.) KAIKOHE, this day. A little girl three years old was murdered, it is alleged by its mother, Amy Stewart, on the Rakauwahi gumfields, near Kaikohe, on Saturday last. The child's throat was cut with a knife, and the wound was afterwards hacked with a tomahawk. The woman waa arrested at 12.25 a.m. on Sunday by Constable Keep, of Kaikohe. An inquest is to be held on the arrival of the Coroner to-day. Thomas Stewart, the husband of Amy Stewart, is an inmate o; the Auckland Hospital. Trouble and poverty are supposed to have completely unhinged the mother's mind.
