(By Telegraph —Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. An inquest on the body of the boy Vass at Lyttelton to-day showed the peanut he swallowed had stuck in his windpipe, and caused sullbcation. An inquest on the body of the woman Janet Watson, who died on Tuesday from taking rough <>n rats, was held to-day, and a verdict oi suicide while of unsound mind was returned. WELLINGTON, Friday. The brothers Hickling, who were con victed of having knowingly received a large quantity of goods in the shape of timber, builders' tools, etc., stolen from houses in course of construction, were sentenced to six months' imprisonment. An application for probation to one of them was refused. DUNEDIN, this day. A fire broke out in the upstairs portion of the St. Kilda Hotel, St. Kilda, last evening. The house was gutted. Most of the stock and a good deal of the furniture were saved. The house, which contains 11 rooms, was owned by Mr.J. 1). Hutton. It is believed to be insured for £400. The lessee, Mr JamcßStemhou.se, is insured for £400 in the Sun Ollice, on stock and furniture. The lire is believed to have been caused by a defective chimney.
