CRIMINAL SESSIONS.

A Serious Charge.—A young man named John Cook was charged with having on April 4th, at Auckland, indecently assaulted a girl named Caroline Elizabeth Wells, nine years of age. —Mr J. A. Tolo conducted the prosecution on behalf of the Crown," and Mr F. E. Baume appeared for the accused, who pleaded not guilty. Evidence was given by the little girl Wells, her mother, Susan \vells, of Durham-street, Drs. King, Lindsay, and others. The medical evid-' ence showed that the girl had been criminally assaulted by someone and her condition was such that Dr. King was called in and subsequently Dr. Lindsay. The girl was away at ncr married sister's at the time the alleged oll'euce was committed, and she did not tell her mother till several days afterwards. The aecu«ed was, a brother-in-law of Mrs Cook, the married sister with whom the girl was staying on April 4th.—Mr Bauwo was proceeding with the defence when we went to press.
