SANTIAGO DE CUBA.
THE FIRST BOMBARD-
MENT
NEW YORK. May IS
A cable to the 'Sun' from Havana says:—Three American warships today bombarded Morro Castle, at Santiago de Cuba. Only slight damage was done. Santiago de Cuba is the capital of Santiago province, and is at the head of a fine bay on the south-east coast of the island. Tin* city has a population of about 4.".000, of whom not more than 10,000 arc whites. Santiago harbour, although one of the best in Cuba, is difficult of access owing to the narrowness of the entrance. Santiago was the scene of the massacre of the Virgin!us' crew in 1573.
