During the last two years the Union Steamship Company spent £450,000 on additions to its fleet. Within that period the Company built live new steamers (the Rakanoa, Hawea, Moana, Waikare and Rotoiti) and purchased three (the Wanaka, Haupiri and Kia Ora), and have two more building, the Mapourika (named after the West Coast lake by Mr Seddon) and the Mokoia (of the Monowai 'class). Two more steamers are to be built shortly, with a view to gradually replacing, by larger, more modern and handsomely-equipped ships, vessels like the Tarawera and Hauroto. It is also in contemplation to substitute within the next 18 months a faster steamer than the Rotomahana.
