The Primate of New Zealand arrived today, and was cordially welcomed by the clergy and laity. lam informed that His Lordship is in improved health. THE FIRE-SWEPT DISTRICTS. The Minister of Works will return on Saturday. I am officially informed that the Government will not remit the rents on fire-swept districts, but will defer the time of payment. THE DEFENCE OF. WELLINGTON. From a visit to Fort Ballance, I am in a position to state that the article in yesterday's paper is the work of a civilian. The fort cannot be carried from any point. Ib is a long climb to the fort, and any attacking force would be destroyed before it could ascend the steep incline. Moreover, tlie guns are protected by shell proof 'shields, and in the gun pits the gunners are safe from rifle fire. Tbe battery is stratagetically placed, and is in telegraph comtt.-inieation with other parts of the system of defence. The idea that any invading force could carry Fort Ballance by a dominating rillo fire is utterly chimerical.
