WELLINGTON, this day

The City Council last night considered a schedule of works' under ex-Mayor Bell's scheme for which authority.was given by an Act of jast session to raise £36,000. It was decided to submit the following items to a vote of the ratepayers :—Additions to destructor, £2,000: tire brigade stations, £4,000; widening Adelaide Road, £1,500; improvements Thorndon Quay and Orient Bay, £3,500 ; baths at te Aro, £2,000 ; other street improvements, £200. The s.s. Maori met very rough weather in the Bay of Biscay. A lifeboat and deckhouse were washed away. Plumbers .have given their masters notice to reduce the working hours to 45^ per week at Is 4d an hour.

Dr. Chippie, who returned by the Maori, was welcomed by friends and various lodges to which he belongs, and was presented with an address congratulating him on his success in passing his examination at Home.

Joseph Keleher, who arrived in Nelson in 1856, and has been settled at Fernside for 30 years, died on Sunday. A welcome rain set in this afternoon at Christchnrch.and throughout the country districts: It has interrupted harvest operations, which have been in full swing notwithstanding the fierce nor'-westers. Even threshing machines are already at work, and if tlie weather keeps dry much of the threshing will be done from stook. In the meantime rain is welcome, as it will benefit the fruit crops, and avert further danger from bush fires.
