POLICE COURT.- THIS DAY.

Drunkenness.—For this offence a first offender was convicted and discharged.— John O'Connor admitted being drunk and disorderly in Adelaide-street. —He was fined 20s and 2s cab fare or the alternative of seven days in Mount Eden. A Double Charge —Robert Casey, a young man, admitted using obscene language in Shortland-street last night. He further admitted assaulting Constable Mitchell by striking him in the face with his clenched fist.—Sergeant Clarke said it was one of the worst cases of the kind that had been before the Court. At a quarter past 10 o'clock last night Constable Mitchell cautioned accused as to his bad conduct in the street. However, he took no notice so the. constable arrested him. He resisted violently and got away from the constable, giving him a blow in the face.—Accused said he had nothing to say. —Mr Brabant sentenced him to one month's imprisonment on each charge, sentences to be concurrent.

Alleged Theft of Jewellery.—A respectable looking woman named Mary Hall, attired in mourning, was charged that on or about the month of February 1597 at Auckland she did steal one 20 dollar gold brooch, gold bangle, gold chain and cross, gold brooch, gold ring- with two emeralds, gold ring with two diamonds and one emerald, 4 gold rings, pair of gold earrings, gold bangle ' and three gold rings of the total value of £180, the property of Eliza Janet Bodle.— Mr Cotter appeared on behalf of accused, and asked that she be remanded until 6th January next. He said that all of the property had been recovered and was in the hands of the police.— Sergeant Clarke, on behalf of the police, said he had no objection to the remand. The police were not ready to go on.—Bail was allowed, accused in £100 and one surety of £200.— The bonds were at once signed, and accused was liberated.
