There will be an election to four John Williamson scholarships in February, 1898, for candidates under 12 years of age on December Ist Avho during the year have attended any of the district schools under the Auckland Board of Education. These scholarships are tenable for three years, and shall not be held in conjunction with other scholarships. The Committee appointed to consider and report on the scholarships established by the Board found that the programme of last year had already been circulated as holding good for 1898, and they therefore did not recommend any alterations of the present arrangements. But they proposed that four additional Junior Foundation Scholarships should be competed for in February next, open to all children under the age of 12 years on the last day of November, ] 897, to be tenable for two years, with boarding allowance of £20 a year for successful candidates residing more than 25 miles from the school.
The Committee also recommended that a Maori scholarship consisting of free education and £20 a year for maintenance should be competed for by any boys of pure native race, not exceeding five in number, under the age of 14 years, such candidates to be selected by the Inspector of Native Schools, to be tenable for three years under the usual conditions.
The Chairman thought it was understood that the granting of these scholarships was connected with the Girls' High School Endowment Bill, and as that had been thrown out perhaps the report was premature. The Board decided to defer consideration of the report, and adjourned till January 24th.
