OBITUARY.

News has been received that on the homeward voyage of the Armand Behic Dr. Armitage, a passenger from New Zealand, died just before reaching Colombo, where he was buried.

The Rev. J. Dellow, Wesleyan minister of Woodend, who was seized witli an acute attack of inflammation on Noveriiber 16, died on Nov. 21. He was an exceedingly popular man. Deceased, who was fortysix years of age, leaves a wife and five children.

Another old Thames identity passed away on Nov. 7 in the person of Mr Andrew Burns, who was present at the opening of the field, and started work as a miner, but after a short time went into the bakery business, "which he continued to carry on until eighteen months ago, when he retired owing to ill-health. His death was due to consumption. Deceased was a stepson of Mr Geo. Wilson, Mining Inspector.

John James Atkinson, major in the New Zealand Militia, died at Invercargill recently. Deceased who was 64 years of age, was born in the Imperial army and won a commission when a young man, joining the West Indian regiment as lieutenant. In 1863 he arrived in Auckland and took part in the Waikato campaign. He was officer in command of the Otago and Southland districts some years ago, and was afterwards in the railway service. For the past 16 years he had been a resident here. He had been ailing, but_ death was not expected. He had a military funeral.

Dr. Thomas Jeffrey Parker, Professor of Biology at Otago University, died at Warrington on November 13 from diabetes. He was 74 years of age. He received the degree of Doctor of Science from his alma mater in 1892, the regulation being relaxed so that he had not to proceed to England to get it. In conjunction with Dr. Haswell, of Sydney University, he has been for the past few years engaged on a compendious work in zoology, the last proof sheets leaving his hands a few weeks before death. Those who have seen the work believe it will remove the reproach that English text books were translations from the German.
