BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The following business was transacted at the Board of Education meeting after we went to press yesterday. Ponsonby School Matters.—The letter from the Chairman of the Ponsonby School Committee, published in last evening's issue, was read. The Board decided not to grant the petition from residents round about Richmond Road asking that the Richmond Road school should no longer remain under the management of the Ponsonby School Committee. The Ellis Case.—The Board sat in Committee yesterday afternoon to consider the evidence laid before them with regard to the charges preferred against Mr Ellis, of Richmond' Road school, by the parents-of the boy Jones in reference to a thrashing which the boy had received at school* After discussion the Board resolved: " That there is> not sufficient evidence before the Board to warrant any further action being taken."

Flat Bush School.—Some discussion took place with regard to a dispute between the Committee of the school and the teacher, Mr Campbell. Ultimately it was resolved to refer all the correspondence to the teacher for his reply. Deputations.—Mr Bagnall drew attention to the amount of time wasted by deputations, and suggested that something should be done to curtail the waste of time. The secretary read a resolution of the Board passed in 1879 that deputations be not received at meetings of the Board unless upon business which cannot be transacted by correspondence.—The Chairman said that resolution was still in force.

Lucas Creek School.—The Secretary stated that applications had been made to the Government to rebuild Lucas' Creek School and £14, had been offered. The actual cost was £261 10s. The Board de-

cided to ask for the latter sum. It was also agreed to send to the Department a Hs'oKorks required to be done in this diTenders.-The following tenders weie accepted f-For rooffing Whangarei School SC Kite £75; work at Opurua South %. P- Brown, £196. SabHshment of Schools.-An application for the establishment of a school at Paewako was deferred. The sSm of £10 was granted to Rangiriri school for an addition to the building- An application from residents of Ngaraiatunua asking for a new school was deferred to the Inspector. Applications i<r buildings fromWerenmSorth and Matahuru were also referred to the Inspector. Applications from Ohaeawai and Ohinemuri were declined. An application fromTauranga for a central school was referred to the Tauranga committee, on the understanding that an answer be received before the next meeting of the Board; failing such report, the Board to proceed to build on the Harrington-street site, Tauranga. _ w Headmasters' Salaries. —Mr J. n. Wright gave notice to move, -That tor the purpose of improving the condition of the -reat bulk of our headteachers who are at present in charge of country schools, and equalising the salaries of those head--1 teachers now in charge of city and subur- ! ban schools, the scheme brought before the I Board by myself be adopted by the Board. iThe scale 'proposed by Mr Wright is as follows :-Class L, school averaging 500 and upwards, £325; class 11.300 and I under 500, £275 ; class 111., 150 to 300, £225 ; class IV., 75 to 150, £19c; class V., 35 and under 75, £160 ; class VI,, 20 and under 35, £125. Schools under 20 average attendance to remain under existing arrangements.
