AUCKLAND RACING CLUB SPRING

MEETING,

Despite the miserable Aveather Ay hich prevailed yesterday, the concluding day's racing of the A.R.C. Spring Meeting attracted fully 4,000 spectators to Ellerslie. Some splendid racing .vas again Avitnessed. During the afternoon Messrs Hayr and Co. passed the sum of £5,217 through the totalisators, making the investments for the three days £18,872. In the Hunt Club Cup the Avinner Mozel was ridden by Mr George Hyde, a popular railway guard. Mr R. Hannon, who rode Monk, had a narrow escape in this race. His mount made a faulty jump at the stonewall and threw him on to the horse's neck. He recovered himself, when the horse SAverved and thre.v him oiF. In falling Mr Hannon's foot caught in the stirrup and he was dragged along the ground, but the whole was unequal to the strain, and it came aAvay,. releasing Mr Hannon, Avho Avas none the Avorse. He again rode in the last race, the Farmers' Steeplechase. The great racing surprise of the day was effected in the Shorts Handicap by Eton, who paid a dividend of £34 7s. At the close a section of the onlookers began hooting and yelling, maintaining that Picklock had finished first. Ho .vever, this Avas uncalled for, as Eton finished in front of Picklock by fully a neck. Details of the concluding races are as follows:—

Kettledrum Avas first away while St. Innis Avas left standing. Kettledrum first entered the straight, followed by Hylas Panacea and Hermosa, but Avhen tne Derby stand Avas reached the first named faded away and Hermosa shooting out from the centre came aAvay and won by two lengths from the outside Roxana, Avho beat Hylas on the post for third honours. Dayntree Avas fourth. Time, 52secs. Dividend, £5 4s.

When the signal was given Conscript went off with the lead, and he showed Mozel the way up the hill, but at the double the leader gave way to Mozel. However, Conscript was again soon at the head of affairs which position he maintained right into the straight, being followed at this point by Miss Nelson, Kingswood and Bombardier. A great set to then ensued between the placed horses, the three racing for a time almost in line. At the grandstand Kingswood had the advantage, but Conscript came again and he iinally won by a length and a half. Perform was fourth and Bombardier fifth, Mozel being last to finish. Time, 6min 43sec. Dividend £5 2s.
