CITY COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the Auckland City Council was held last evening, there being in attendance His Worship the Mayor (Mr P. Dignan) and Crs. Jamieson, Trenwith, Grey, Farrell, Kidd, McNab, Stichbury, Courtney, White, Patterson, Hewson, Warren, Julian.

Hamilton Road.—Messrs Samuel Vaile and Sop asked the Council to complete the formation of Hamilton Road, between Sarsfield-street and the sea. Referred to the Streets Committee.

Patronage. — The Council declined to give their patronage to a benefit to Miss Hettie Howard to be held in the Opera House on November 22nd, the applicant to be informed that the Council could not grant such patronage other than in cases of public charity. Extending the Franchise. — Circular letters were read from the town clerks of Gore and Dunedin asking the Council to oppose the Municipal Franchise Enlargement Bill now before Parliament. —Crs. Farrell, Kidd, Hewson, and Beecroft spoke against the Bill, and on the motion of Cr. Farrell it was resolved that the Council cooperate with the Gore and' Dunedin boroughs in opposing the Bill, and that Auckland members of Parliament be asked to use their influence against the Bill being passed.' The Salvation Army.—Mr John Rendell, draper, wrote calling attention to the annoyance caused by the Salvation Army meetingson Saturday nights at the junction of Upper Pitt-street and Karangahape Road. The constant drumming, he said, was distracting and detrimental to business. The leaders had been asked to shift their ground occasionally, but to no purpose.—The letter was referred to the Legal Committee, the Traffic Inspector to report. Stables.—Eleven residents of Mill-street, at the rear of Symonds-street, wrote they were informed Dr. Hope Lewis proposed to remove his stable from his Symonds-street premises to Mill Yard in close proximity to their dwellings. They requested the Council to refuse any permission to Dr. Lewis to remove his stables into Mill Yard, and prevent the petitioners heing annoyed. —Referred to the Streets Committee to report.

Auctioneer's License.—An auctioneer's license was granted to Neville Newcomb. Hopetoun-street.—Mr T. W. Doonin's offer to lease allotment in Hopetoun-street at £26 per year was accepted. Streets Committee.—-This Committee recommended :—(1) Petition from residents Bunnell and England streets, and letter from Town Clerk, Newton, re lamps : Committee recommends applications be considered at next allocation of lamps.—(2) Petition from ratepayers Ponsonby re water cart for Ponsonby Road : Committee recommends reply in accordance with Engineer's report, viz., instructions have been given to keep the cart going when required.—(3) Petition from residents Wallace-street re concrete water channel : Committee recommends work be done by ward workmen at estimated cost of £S.— (4) Petition from residents Symonds-street re paved crossing : Committee recommends reply in effect of Engineer's report, viz., when metal now being laid has been rolled, a metal waste crossing will be put down, if required.—(s) Memo, from Engineer re signboards, contrary to regulations : Committee recommends that effect be given to Engineer's recommendation, viz., permits to be issued for angular signboards where no verandah exists, and for nine-inch board parallel with verandah rafters, three months' notice to remove or alter existing signboards contrary to regulations to he given. Deferred Finance Committee report, items re drainage and water supply.— The report was adopted without discussion.

Drains.—Cr. Kidd moved, "That the Streets Committee be requested to consider and report as to the best means of amending clause 68 of the Building Regulations, in order that better provision be made for carrying out private connections to main drains."—Cr. Hewson suggested that bylaws 7S and 84 re cesspits, etc., in outside areas be also considered with a view to revision.—Cr. Kidd consented, and the whole was put and carried.
