WELLINGTON, this day.

The barque Ben Nevis, Captain Sims, which arrived to-day from GlasgOAV via Melbourne, had an eventful passage. After a course had been shaped east for Australia she met a severe storm, and narroAvly escaped foundering. On July 3rd an avalanche of water swept over her, carrying away the steering gear, and washing the man at the Avheel to the other end of the vessel. ' Johansen, a Norwegian sailor, who Avas preparing to go aft to relieve him, was washed overboard and droAvned. With the loss of her steering gear the barque became unmanageable and "broached to*" of her ©Avn accord, with most disastrous results. As she SAvept helplessly round amountainous sea crashed on board, and the vessel for a time was buried in water. Portions of her bulwarks were carried aAvay, the lifeboats and davits shared a similar fate, the peon deck Avas smashed and the quarter hatch stove in, this and other damage being but the work of a feAV seconds. The cabm was completely flooded and everything moveable in it was swept away. Captain Sims lost all his navigating instruments and charts. A course was taken for Melbourne, where repairs Avere effected. The rest of the voyage was uneventful.
