BOROUGH COUNCIL.

DEVONPORT.

The ordinary meeting of the Devonporfc Borough Council was held last evening, when there were present :—Messrs J. 0. Macky (Mayor), 0. Mays, R. H. Duder, R. Mitchell, J. Dunning, W. Handley, G. Creeth, G. H. Brookes and A. Harvey.

Plowing Club.—The North Shore Rowing Club were granted permission to remove and use skids from the old admiralty shed.

Rifle Range.—A deputation of residents and landowners in the neighbourhood of Shoal Bay waited on the Council and entered a protest against the rifle range now in course of construction by the Akarana Rifle Club at Shoal Bay, permission for which had been granted by the Auckland Harbour Board. The deputation, which consisted of Messrs Sinton, Cranch, Jenkins, Millar, and Martin, objected to range on the ground that rifle practice on it would be dangerous to residents and visitors. The Council unanimously agreed to write to the contractor for the work and the secretary of the Akarana Rifle Club asking that the work be stopped, as the landowners in the vicinity objected. It was also resolved to write to the Harbour Board asking what the Board had been doing in the matter of granting permission to the Club for a rifle range in Snoal Bay, within the jurisdiction of the Borough Council. The Mayor and Councillors Harvey and Handley were appointed a sub-committee to take the matter in hand with power to stop the work if possible.

Kemoval of Soil.—An application from the Takapuna Jockey Club for permission to take-soil from the eastern side of Lakestreet was granted, the work to be done under the supervision of the Foreman of Works.

Standard Survey. — Mr J. Bollard, M.H.R., wrote stating that he had heard nothing further from the chief surveyor regarding the proposed standard survey of the borough.—Received with thanks. Water Supply.—The waterworks engineer reported that during the past month the pump at Lake Pupuke had pumped 2,171,000 gallons of water ; the quantity of coal used was 11 tons 14cwt, and the time occupied was 67 hours.
