Two good reefs carrying over five ounces to the ton have been discovered at Newcastle, 40 miles from Perth, which is the nearest point to the capital where gold has yet been discovered. The Kanowna rush still attracts much attention. Fourteen claims obtained good gold at different points over a length of a third of a mile. 1,500 men are on the held.

W. Carter lowered the 78-mile Austra' lasian road record from 2 hours 24 minutes to 2 hours 11 minutes. He was assisted by pacemakers.
