The annual meeting was held on Friday in Mr H. Gilfiilan's office, when Colonel Burton presided. The report of the directors stated that nothing of a payable nature had been discovered. Smith was elected in the place of Mr J. T. Steele. At a special meeting held subsequently, it was decided that it be an instruction to directors not to prosecute any further work, and to dispose of the plant and tools. WAIHI MONUMENT. • A meeting of shareholders in this Company was held to-day in Mr D. G. McDonnell's office, when Mr Lonias Smith presided. The balance-sheet showed total receipts £865 10s sd, and the expenditure left a credit balance of £109 lis. The Chairman explained that outstanding liabilities, including the uncompleted contract, would amount to about £110, and the call to come in would give £208. Mr E. M. Corbett explained that owing to the floods the water got into the low level, which, causing the timber to swell, rendered it unsafe and practically worthless, as it would be as cheap to put in a fresh drive. Mr Corbett stated that he went round the outcrop and took three .or four samples of ore. Subsequently he handed the samples to Mr Stone of the Waitekauri United Company. That gentleman assayed them and said they were worth £13 per ton. That was the reason why he sent the wire asking to have the meeting of shareholders postponed. Subsequently Mr Stone and himself again visited the place where the ore was taken from and took several samples. These when assayed yielded about £1 per ton. Mr Corbett said he must have got a bit out of a small rich vein on the first occasion that caused such good assay results to be obtained. The shareholders present accorded Mr Corbett a vote of thanks, and as evidence of faith in his report passed a recommendation to the directors to make the necessary calls to cany out the work advised by Mr Corbett, namely to drive at the low level until tbe reef was intersected.
