FLOODS IN TARANAKI.
PERILOUS EXPERIENCE OF A
SETTLER,
OVER TWO DAYS ON A TREE
STUMP,
-£By ; Telegraph— Press Association.)
NEW PLYMOUTH, this day. News has just reached here from Tongagorutu of serious floods on the Mimi Road, the future main road to Auckland. In places the road has completely disappeared, and large slips have blocked it in other places. Two men working on the road were cut off in 'their tent from high ground by the flood. One of them who could swim went for assistance, but when it arrived, the current was too strong, and the other man had to remain perched on a stump with no covering but his shirt and vest for two days and one night till the flood subsided. Many settlers lost live, stock. Road commucication between New Plymouth and the settlemeut north of White Cliffs is cut off except at great risk, and settlers are dependent for their supplies on a small cutter trading from Waitara. Provisions consequently are rising in price. It appears that the responsibility for the maintenance of the road is disputed by the Clifton County Council and the Government. Meantime the settlers endure great hardships and loss.
