ATTEMPTED BURGLARY.

THE NEWTON POST OFFICE

ENTERED.

It would appear that Auckland has nofe yet got rid of the burglar fraternity, for soon after one' o'clock this morning MrBaker, officer in charge of the Newton Post •• and Telegraph Office, Karangahape Road, . was awakened out of his sleep by a noise as ■ of footsteps in his bedroom. He got up and ' saw either two or three men going down the staircase. The private side door was open and by this means the intruders got away, leaving a chisel behind them. Mr Baker at once called from his window for the police, and Mr Simpson, night-watch-man, and Constable Johnston, who were not far distant at the time, were soon in attendance. An examination of the pre» raises showed that nothing had been taken. This morning Detective Herbert was engaged making inquiries into the matter. In connection with the burglary, Mr W. L. Simpson, night watchman, writes :—• " Ponsonby Road, September 28th.—To the Editor: Sir, —In reference to the attempted burglary at the Newton Post Office this morning at 1.20 o'clock, I was one block on" the Post Office with Constable Johnson when Mr Baker, the Postmaster, called out of his window for assistance. The constable and myself went at once to the assistance of the Postmaster. We then went into the Post Office and searched all over the premises with a lamp, but found no one "there. I did not leave the place until live o'clock this morning."—W. L. Simpson, Watchman.
