MINERS' STRIKE

The Hartley Vale shale miners have struck owing to the management refusing their demand for an increase in the rate of wages.
Wellington, Monday. < The local members of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers have received a circular from the Secretary of the Council for Australasia, calling attention to a cable message received from the London ollice, as follows :—" Lock out. General help urgently needed. Please levy members.' In response to this, the Council has directed that a vote be taken at once on the question of making a levy of 2d per week per member, the levy to remain in force as long as may be required, provided that a further vote be taken every three months. DUNEDIN, Monday.
(At a meeting of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers to consider the strike in Britain it was agreed to remit in the meantime £120 to assist in the struggle for eight hours a day, and to request all trades unions in l),uneclin to open subscriptions.
