CHARGE OF THEFT.

(By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.)

Coromandel, this day. A MAN named Richard Rowe was arrested by Constable Law last Friday, at Opitonui, on a charge of stealing a gold ring, the property of A. Rugg, of Coromandel. It is alleged the theft was committed in February, 1896, the ring being discovered recently in a pawnbroker's shop at Auckland. Accused was brought up before local J.P.s yesterday, and remanded till next Friday to enable the police to produce fresh evidence. It is understood several other charges of a similar nature will be preferred against Rowe.

The impressive function of the renewal of baptismal vows by the children attending the Catholic School, Mowick, eventuated at the conclusion of the 11 o'clock Mass on Sunday, Monsiynor McDonald being celebrant. The little ones were neatly attired in white dresses with wreaths, and carefully prepared for the function by Miss White, teacher. Miss Mary Cadigan read the prescribed form in a distinct and very pleasing manner, being supported by Miss Brady and Miss Kearney, children of tender years. Notwithstanding the boisterous weather there was a good congregation, and all seemed very pleased with the eilective manner in which the ceremony was carried out. It may be stated that owing to the downpour of rain during the evening the function as regards the children who attend the Catholic School, Pan mure, had to be postponed to Sunday next.
