Miss Ruthven's rendering of " Polacco," by Weber, was much admired. After the various items were gone through a handsome gold watch was presented to Miss Ruthven as a reward for passing Matriculation and Civil Service examinations, also Trinity College senior music examinations. Trinity College certificates were given to Miss Ruthven for pianoforte playing (senior division) ; Miss Johnston, singing (senior division); Miss Leah Brown, pianoforte playing (primary division); also to Miss N. Lynch, Misses Matilda Brown and Ellen Brown. A pleasant function took place on the afternoon of Saturday last at the mill offices of the Kauri Timber Company (Limited), when the clerical stall" of the Company met to do honour to Mr Robert Smyth, clerk in the mill manager's department, the occasion being his approaching marriage to Miss E. Farrant. Mr T. H. White, the mill manager, acting as spokesman for those assembled, made a very able and sympathetic speech, in which he eulogised Mr Smyth for his faithful service of the Company in the past, for his loyalty and good fellowship towards all those who came in contact with him in his every day duties, and above all for his discrimination, good taste and sound common sense in selecting the young- lady he had chosen as his future helpmeet. Mr White ably touched upon the duties of a husband to his wife and his country, and heartily, on behalf of himself and all the gentlemen present, wished Mr Smyth a long, prosperous, and peaceful married life. At the close of his address Mr White, on behalf of the Kauri Timber Company, presented Mr Smyth with a handsome table, and on behalf of the Auckland clerical staff.of the Company with a marble timepiece and several other articles for use and ornament in his future life. Mr White's remarks were well backed by a short but pithy speech by Mr MeKinstry, and the sentiments expressed by both these gentlemen were received with acclamation. Mr Smyth made a graceful acknowledgement of the kindness which had been shown him during the entire period of his service with the Kauri Timber Company, and which culminated in this tribute of friendship, which he had great pleasure in accepting, and for which he most heartily thanked them on his own behalf and on behalf of his future wife.
