Gisbosne, this day. The following resolution was adopted at a meeting of the East Coasfa Railway League t
—" That the Premier be written to, congratulating him on his return, and stating thab the league would be pleased to meab him ob appointment by deputation, to advocate a scheme of light railway construction on the East Coasb and inland districts, in order that effect may bo given during the ensuing session of Parliament to the published views of the Hon, J. Carroll, which have been adopted by the league ; thab this league is cf opinion thab the time has arrived when, in the interests of the colony of ]Mew Zealand, especially of those parts now isolated from the main centres of commercial activity, a system of light railways should be adopted without) delay ; that if the Government! cannos conscrucb such lines aa ara necessary oub of the ordinary revenue of the colony, a loan should be raised for the purpose, such loan to be devoted to specific works in specific sums, and in the allocation of the moneys to be borrowed and expended due regard shall be had to tho necessities of the various districts, bo the possible advantages accruing from such undertakings, and bo the claims which each district may fairly pub forward for the expenditure of public money for reproductive purposes within its own boundaries ; and that ohie resolution be printed and forwarded to all kindred leagues, all chambers of commerce, and all labour organisations throughout the colony, and to all the members of both Houses of the Legislature." Napier, Thursday. A crowded public meeting, attended by all the leading business men and many prominent, country settlers, received and heard a deputation from Wairoa on the subject of a light railway from Napier to Gisborne and Rotorua, via Wairoa. Great enthusiasm prevailed and it was resolved to starb a branch of the railway league hare to co-operate with tho Wairoa and Gisborne leagues. ________
