Hamilton, Thursday. The Borough Council i 9 giving tho main etreeb a very necassary heavy coating of gravel, in anticipation of bhe web eeasoa. The Rev. J. J. Mather was tendered a farewell social in tho Volunteer Hall lasb night. The audience was a large one, and the musical portion of the programme was moab enjoyable. Items were contributed by Miss Alice Rimmar, Miss Grace Butcher, Mrs Whitaker, Mr Meachem, and Rev. Mr Mitchell. Tho latter gentleman was greatly en evidence ; ho gave a Scotch reading which lac bad about three-quarters of an hour. Mr Mather departs in about a fortnight).

On Tuesday, Mra Raynes, wife of Mr ,: Job. Raynes, of Tamahors, died in the Waikato Hospital. Her ailmenb was a peculiar one, the blood vessels in various parts of her body having burnt), causing internal hemorrhage which quickly carried her away. The Raynes family have been particularly unfortunate of late, and much sympathy is felb for them. The final crickeb match of the Reason will come off on Saturday, when Taupiri and Tuhikaramea will play off to- decide the championship of the Waikato. A meeting is called for Friday nighb of those interested in the formation of a Horticultural Society. There is no intention to in any way compete with the existing Society. Ohaupo, Tuesday. A committee consisting of Messrs Mears, Laurie, Graham, Ranch, A. Edwards and Colhoun has been appointed to carry out a sports gathering on May 12th. The Comjnibtoa will meet on Saturday night bo make the necessary arrangements and frame a , programme. Tamahkre, Tuesday. Mr I). Smarb, who baa held the position of head master at the school here for tho pasb three or four yoarß, has jusb received notice of his promotion to the Tamaki Weeb School, near St. Helier's Bay. Though eorry to lose him his many friends will be pleased fco bear of his advancement.
