London, April 1. Advices from Rio state that a Portuguese named Conselheiro, who claims to be the Messiah, is entrenched with eight thousand followers at Cauudas, a province in Bahia. The rebels defeated a Government force of fifteen hundred, killing a general, thirty officers and six hundred meo, besides capturing artillery. They massacred the wounded and mutilated their bodies. A force of seven thousand is starting from Bahia to suppress the rising.
