A SERIOUS CHARGE.
At the Police Conrfc to-day, before Mr H. W. Northcroib, S.M., Arthur O. Field was charged with having, ab Tairua, fraudulently converted to his own use the sum of £100, the property of the Kauri Timber Company. Mr Dufaur, who appeared for the prosecution, said there had been a difficulty in getting evidence together, and he was nob yet prepared to go on. He would therefore ask for a further remand. His Worship said ib would be better to remand the accused to Mercury Bay. That was the nearest Court to where the offeree was committed. Mr Dufaur said ib would cause less expense to bring the witnesses from Tairua here. Tha accused said that if he were remanded to Mercury Bay he would be able to get bail. He wanted to get out to obtain a solicitor ami collect evidence. Mr Dufaur said thab if it would assist the accused to prove his innocence the Company would have no objection to the remand to Mercury Bay. He might say the defalcation* shown by the books amounted to about £600, there being several other informations against the accused, and the Company were anxious to afford him every opportunity of proving his innocence. Hi» \Yorship said ha would not remand the accused to Mercury Bay, as there was only a lock up there. He would remand him for eight days. On tha application of the accused* bail was allowed, in hi* own bond of £200 and two sureties of £100 each.
