WollongQng is in a difficulty with respect to which the famous Miltonic phrase of •* darkdess visible " is nob withoub application. Tho local aldormen, rinding thab the ways and means provided for defraying the expense of lighting the town were insuffienb for tha purpose, approached the dispensers of the light, that is to Bay.the Gas Company, with a view to a more economic arrangement. Certain proposals offered by the aldermen were rejected by the company, and on the other hand, those which tbe company pub forward fared no better at bhe hands of the aldermen. Not being able to .arrive at an accommodation with regard bo the matter, the council has formally notified tho company to discontinue lighting the town after the lasb day of the present month.
