THE KERERU BURNING CASE.

Wellington, Saturday. The charge againsb William Chappie of having placed Jessie Hay on a fire ab Kereru and causing her bodily harm was further investigated boday. Catherine Maher daposed bhab she saw Jessie Hay running down bhe road on January 4_h. Accused followed her, and tho latter cried, "Oh, don'b let them murder mo." Accused abtempted to sbrike Hay, bub witness, prevented him. Hay's behaviour was peculiar, and wibness thought she was an ost?&pee from the lunatic asylum. Jessie Hay was cross-examined by bbc accused's counsel, and iv the main substantiated her former statements, but admitted that her memory failed her from the time the accused and she gob oub at.Shannon until they arrived ab Kororu. She attributed the conduct of bhe accused, who had been very kind bo her before, bo hor declining his improper overtures. The caso was adjourned until Monday.
