CHARGE OF SLANDER.
VERDICT AGAINST A PRO
HIBITIONIST.

Christchurch, Thursday. In fche Supremo Court lasb evening the case of Thomas Popham, licensee of Coker'e Hotel, against Thomas E. Taylor, was concluded. Plaintiff alleged thab in April last, aba-public meeting ab.Gofe, defendant, who was- a leading prohibitionist, used slanderous words concerning his hotel, Messrs Wilding and Bruges appeared for plaintiff, and Mr Alex. Adams (Dunedin), and Mr A. R. Atkinson (Wellington) for defendant. _ Insoecbor Broham, Sergts. Briggs and Hilson deposed that although peoplo of loose character resided in Georee-stneefc, no irregularities in the bar of Coker s Hotel had been seen or reported. The jury returned a verdicb for the plaintiff for £50. Costs on the usual scale werealowed. Leave was reserved to the defendant to move generally.
