FREEMAN'S BAY RECLAMATION.
NEGOTIATIONS.FOR PURCHASE
ADVANCED A STAGE,
At bhe last meeting of the Auckland City Council the quesßion of the Freeman's Bay reclamation came before the Councillors. In accordance with notice of motion, -Mr W. Thorne moved, " Th&b it be an instruction to the Legal Committee of this Council to negotiate wibh the Harbour Board for the purchase Freeman's Bay Reclamation for a recreation ground, in terms of the Board's resolution passed at a meeting held on 30th March laab, and report resulb to bhe Council for their approval or otherwise." In speaking to bhe motion Mr Thorne said the reclamation, with bhe exception of a road on the- seaward eide, would belong 'to . the city, and the road would belong to the Harhour Board, which would give the latber the right to reclaim further to sea if they I chose to. After a conference between their | own Committee' and the Harbour Board, 'the' resulb would be submitted again !to the Council for approval, and then it would have to go before the public for iba decision. There could be no doubb, he submitted, of tho need of 1 such a recreation ground, and ib would ( never do to leb this, tho. last piece of ground, slip oub of their hands. Some; years age the Council lost the opportunity of securing the Surrey Hills, and he hoped that would nob occur in the preaent in- ; stance. Mr Baume seconded. Mr Hewson opposed, and moved "Thab for the presenb the Council do nob take inbo consideration the purchasing of Freeman's Bay." . . Mr.Hewson's amendment waa pub, and lost by six to nine. Mr Thome's motion was pub and carried by ten to four.
