MEETING AT THAMES

Thames, this day. Last night's public meeting to protest againsb the action of the Mines Department in threatening to cancel mining licences ab Tairua which havo been granbod by Warden Kenny, was largely attended and marked by tbo greatest enthusiasm. Mr Potts, President of the Miners' Union, occupied tho chair. The principal speakers were: Messrs James Mackay, James McGowan, W. H. Lucas, H. J. Groenslade. T. Boyle, VV. Deeblo, C. Waito and McKendrick. Resolutions were unanimously carried amidst the greatesb enthusiasm-

1. "Thab this meeting, in expressing sympathy in tho case of Mr F. McLiver, considers it imperative upon the Governmenb to confirm- his title to bho ground, which he has held for so many years."

2. " That, in tho interests ot mining, and further development of tho mineral resources in tho province of Auckland, ib has become imperatively necessary thab the Governmenb should compel all timber lease licenses and rights to be definitely defined." 3. "Thab in tho caso of timb.r leases from which timber has been removed, tho Governmenb should resume control of such lands, and cause ib to bo decided by law if the holder of said lands is entitled to compensation or obhenviae ; if they are entitled bo compensation such to bo provided from the timber reserve."

4. "Thab, is case of timber leases from which timber has nob been removed, such leases should be cancelled, compensabicn being provided from the consolidated revenue." Copies of those resolutions were ordered to be'telegraphed to bhe Premier, Minister for Mines and members for Auckland constituencies. A Committeo consisting of Messrs McGowan, Radford, Greenslade, Potts, Lucas, Corbotb, Fraler, and Swindley was appointed to, if necessary, rai.o funds by public subscription and fight tho matter out to the end, even to tho Appeal Courb.
