THE CENSUS.

POPULATION OF AUCKLAND.

A SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE,

Mb John Kino,, the Auckland census enumerator, has almost completed the results of the late census for the county ot Eden and county of Manukau, and''the returns made up show a great increase in the firßt-named county. This county includes tho boroughs of Auckland, Rarnell, Newton, and Newmarket, the increase in these four boroughs compared with the census taken in IS9I showing a total of 4,464. The increase in the county of Manukau is small.

Complete returns are yet to come in from the following counties :—Mongbnui, Whangaroa, Hokianga, Bay of Islands, Hobson, Whangarei, Otamatea, Rodney, Waitematu, Coromandel, Thames, Ohinemuri, Tauranga, Whakatane, Pia-o, Waikato, Waipu, Raglan, and Rotorua. In 1891, the gross population of these counties totalled 48,926. Making fair allowances for increases in theee districts, and adding the gross totals for the Eden and Manukau counties, we will not be surprised if the total returns lor the Auckland Province when completed will total up to 135,000. The total population at the last census for the whole of the colony was 626,658.

The following totals respecting bhe difforenb sub-districts in the boroughs and counties mentioned show the figures clearly :—

RODNEY AND WAITEMATA. - The population of the counties of Rodney and Waitemata have been completed as follows by the enumeratorRodney counties and adjaconb islands: Great Barrier Island, 307; Kawau Island, 10; Albert Riding; 564 ; Tauhoa Ridiag, 383 ; HobeO Riding, 440 ; Omaha Riding, 337; East Matakana Road district, 109; West Matakana Road district," 194 ; East Mahurangi Road Districb, 143 ; Upper Mahurangi Road District, 833 ; Puhoi Ridine, 466. Waibemata County and interior boroughs : Walnui oatlying district, 476; Whangaparoa Road District, 107; Pukeatua Road District, 650 ; Tukapuna Riding, 758 ; Northcote Riding, 530 ; Bir-. kenhead Borough, 690 ; Birkenhead Riding, 350 ; Pins Island, 10 ; Kaukapakapa Road Di3tricb, 578 ; Kaukapakapa Oublying District, 1532; Helensville Town Dietrict, 564; Mairetahi Riding, 354; Waitakerei Riding,' 1,037; Waikomiti Riding, 764 ; Devonport Borough, 3,016 ; tobal. 14,257 ; shipping, 24; grand^ total, 14,281. This return shows an iucrease all round, with the exception of the town of Helensville, the population of which has decreased by about 200, consequent on the removal of a number of the sawmills. Tho increase for Waitemata. County is 450, and for Rodney County 403. The details of the increase have not yet been made out.
