Amy Sherwin.

Her Home Ransacked by Burglars.

(from our own correspondent.)

London, September 20. The comfortable home of Miss Amy Sherwin and her husband, Herr Gorlitz, at 53, Wellington Road, St. John's Wood, has during the absence of the family ab the seaside been effectually ransacked by burglars. The affair occurred on Thursday nighb last, and, according to a gifted member of the * Pall Mall Gazette' staff, who in vestigateid lb, there were four or more burglars in tbe party, though it ia not likely they numbered more than a quartette. Leas tban two men could not havo made a complete wreck of the interior of a commodious residence in the limited time ab bheir command. They firsb entered bhe drawing-room on tho righb of bho hall. Ib contained, among other things, a number of costly and curious trinkets that bad been presented to Mdme. Sherwin or purchased by her husband in various parts of the world. These, or nearly all of tbem, wero taken. The drawing-room on the lefb of the hall was denuded in fche aame way, and the burglars were careful not to overlook a magnificent tablo cover that had been made in India and thab had coot four hnndred rupees, when the latter were worth a good deal more than they are now. They smashed a number of small and beautifully mado boxes in Mdme. Sherwin'a rooms, and in this way bocame tho owners of considerable jewellery, though Mdme. Sherwin fortunately took mosb of her jewellery with her when she went to the seaside, bhe others having been placed in a safo deposit. AH her walking costumes were packed up and carried away by tbe early callers, bub bhe latter did nob even handlo half a dozen beaubiful stage coatumes. Tbey found a sealskin coat and muff and along fur cloak. These valuab|a and comfortable articles muab have been discovered towards bho finish, as they wero dropped in bhe hall as the burglars were leaving. Two frock-coats, a morning and a drese .uit, and eoveral pairs of trousers, once tho property of Mr Gorlitz, are hia no more. A large quantity of fino napery disappeared in one of the large and handy sackß carried by knights of the jemmy, and then the burglars vißited the highest floor. All the christening presents of the youngest member of the family were removed to other quarters. Several handsome presents from M. Paderewski were stolen. All of^ Mr Gorlitz's papers wero carefully examinod but nono were taken. Every part of^ tho house, except the wine cellar, was visited. In the kitchen the burglars made themselves comfortable for a while, and ate a more or less hurried meal, after which they smoked a couple of cigarettes there. Then, having nothing more to do, and nob wishing t» alarm tbo neighbourhood or give the police any unneceesary trouble, they lefb the houae and Sb. John's Wood in the nnobtrusiva way co much in fashion among buitglars. They lefb the improvißed lantern in tho kitchen. It was constructed oub of the besb bop hab possessed by Mr Gorlitz and a candle. The combinabion mado a firstrate lantern, bub ib mado a ridiculous wreck of tho hab, which is now unfib ovoo for a St. Patrick's Day parade. One of tbe burglars left a pair of boots, aa he found others on the premiaes that wore superior. The ulster of the impresario probably covered a multitude of sins aaid left the promiaeß. Tho frienda of Mdme. Sherwin and Mr Gorlitz will be glad to know thab they were insured against burglarß, so thab bheir loss will consist only of such arbiclea as cannob be replaced. Still I, thia is nob a matter for congratulation.
