EIGHT HOURS DEMONSTRATION.
A large and enthusiastic meeting of the Eight Hours Demonstration Committee was held in the Foresters' Hall, Newton, last evening, representatives being present from the following organisations:—Knights of Labour, Workers' Political Reform League, Bootmakers' Union, Amalgamated Engineers, Liberal Association, Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners, Kauri Timber Company, Waitemata Sawmill, Goldio's Sawmill, Leyland, O'Brien, and Co., Typographical Association, Employers' Association and Builders' Association.
Mr J. P. Koycrofb presided. r In addition to the usual delegates, there were also present:—The Rev. Shirley Baker, Mr J. M. Dargaville, and Mr Fawcue, representing the Liberal Association, and Mr F, G. Ewington and Mr Graves Aickin the Employers' Association. * IWr Macdermotb objected' to political organisations taking part in the movement. Mr Ewington said they had come for the purpose of promoting; [an eight hours demonstration, and to ask the colony to agree to that system. The Rev. S. Baker said he was only there to lend a helping hand to the eight hours movement, and would withdraw it anything political was introduced. Messrs Macdermott, Chappell, and
Harvey; delegates of the Typographical Society, ultimately declined-to take further part • in- the proceedings, but by request they remained aa spectators, not as delegates. ' '
The following officers were then elected : —President, Rev, Shirley Baker; Secretary, Mr John Creamer ; Treasurer, Mr T. Tudehope; Sports Committee Secretary' Mr W. J. Worth. , . .
