ALLEGED PERSONATION AT THIS RECENT ELECTION.
|| THE DEFENDANT FINED.
At bhe Police Court this morning, a case of personation alleged to have occurred ab the recent Thompson - Monk election contest, came before Mr IT. VV. Northcrofb, S.M.
The defendant, James Corley, junior (a young man), waa charged with that he did, on 24th July, ab Auckland, ab the election of a member of the House of Representatives for the electoral district of city of Auckland, wilfully and knowingly make a false answer to a question pub to him by the Returning Officer.
Mr Cotter, on behalf of defendant, pleaded guilty to the charge. Mr McAlister said thab defondanb bad been questioned and warned by the Returning officer when he wenb bo vote. He persisted in voting in the name of a different person, though warned of bhe consequences. It was a serious offence, and he hoped His Worship would nob deal wibh bhe matter lightly.
Mr Cotter said although defendant vobed in bhe name of James Corley, yeb in reality ib was hie own name. The name on bhe roll Was James Corley, baker, and defendant's own name waa Jaß. Corley, and hia occupation was thab of a baker. No word Senior or junior appeared on the roll. He asked that a nominal penalty be inflicted, as ib was not a base where defendant represented himself under anobher name.
Mr Norbhcroft inflicbed a fine of £10 and costs. The costs amounted to £4 7a. The majority of the witnesses summoned did nob claim their expenses. A second charge againsb defendant that he did apply for a voting paper in the nanle Of Jamea Corley; the eldei, then on the roll of the electoral district of the' City of Auckland, waa withdrawn.
Mr McAlister said that the fine imposed in the first case would meet the ends of justice. _■_______
