THE WAIHI MINE!

ANOTHER EXCELLENT- RETURN,

Another excellen 6 return was obtained this month from the Waihi mine. The result of the crushing was sent last night. For the 28 days ending-May 4, 2,190 tons' :of ore were crushed and treated, yielding £7,540 worth of bullion, an average ot over £3 8s lOd per ton. This is an improvement upon'the return for the previous month. The output from* this mine; to date, now , totals the respectable earn of £269,644. I- SCHOOL OF MINES. Pennefather, the Commissioned appointed to inquire into the question o* the validity or otherwise of the McArthur Forrest patant for the process of savin_ gold by the cyanide process, sab yesterday at the Star 'Hotel .to' take evidence. The witnesses examined were Messrs Geo; T. Lawlor, Geo. Denby (chemist), W. H. Martin, G.B. Hilton, H. M. Shepherd and T. F. Chees6man. The ex_ininafcion of witnesses was confined to those able to give evidence to show whether. or not cyanide had been used for the extraction ;cf gold from the matrix prior to the issue of the patents to McArthur Forrest on the 28th of November, 1888. Waihi South. —A meeting of persons interested in the Birthday, Christmas Box,' New Year, and Mackay No.-1 Licensed Holdings, at Waihi South, has been convened for next Monday, the objectbeing to settle a course of action for the future. MINE MANAGERS' REPORTS. Woodstock. —The manager reports that the extension of the No. 3 level southwards has been confined tD stripping the No. 2 lode, which will be broken down about next Saturday. There is no material alteration in the; character or quality of the No. 2 lode, where the six stopes are now in progress, and the average • assay value of the ore coming to hand from end to end of the block—4oo feet ,in length—is £5 9s, per ton.: Ab the No. 3 level the rich ore shoot has nob yet been reached. The lode averages 4fb in width1 and carries! more or leas gold and silver thtoughout. In order to got under the Scotb shoot ofrich ore 120 ft will require yet to be driven. The manager also forwarded a list of assays and pointed out tha6 they showed the percentage of bullion recovered by thecyanide' process is still very low on the average.. Ivanuoe.—No. 1 reef has been broken down without showing much improvement in the prospects. Aboub 15 feet of this reef have also Been broken on the side of the spur. It is full of minerals, bub so far prospects of gold have nob been seen. Men are now engaged stripping the" reef near the river.

Marmios.— The manager reports :— " Stack pole's reef is sbill increasing in size, and eight feet of quartz is showing in the faceab presenb* and no sign,of the foobwall. Small prospectsjpf gold are obbainable from any portion of the reef in the face, but ib is nob good enough to save for treatment." ;
