THE HALF HOLIDAY.

Mr Crowther, JM.H.B., to-day wired to the Premier as follows :—" Doubtless you are aware a resolution was passed on the •7th insb., by a large and influential meeting of shopkeepers, askings that they be noli further prosecuted closing on Wednesday instead of Saturday, until Parliament haß again dealb with this vexed question. Considering tbe presenb state of feeling in Auckland, I strongly recommend you to comply wibh their request/, thereby quietening the enmity that ab presenb exists." ;

The following reply ba3 been received by Mr C. E. Button, M.H.K., from the Hon. W. P. Reeves aneut the resolution passed ab the-meeting of shopkeepers at the V.M.C.A. on Tuosday last :—"I have to acknowledge your courtesy in forwarding the resolution re closing day. Whilst obaorving with pleasure that the shopkeepers recognise the importance of a weukly half-holiday, I have to point out, what to you, as a lawyor and a legislator, must be self-evident, that the Government has no power bo interfere with the operation of the Act. Only a few weeks can now elapse before the meeting of Parliament, and any section of the Auckland public that feels agrieved may then take steps to alter tbe law."—(Signed) W. P.
