BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The adjourned meeting of the, Board of Education was held to-day at the Board's office, Victoria Arcade, when there were present:—Messrs R. Udy (Chairman), S. Luke, J. Muir, W. Woodward, H. Wildingand Rev. J. Bates.

Pupil, Teachers.-—The reporb' of tha sub-committee on the employment and training of pupil teachers, and notices of motion thereon by the Rev. J. Batee, were considered.—On the motion of Mr Luke, the reporb of the subcommittee was referred to a Committee consisting of the Chairman, Rev. J, Bates and the Chief Inspector, a reporb to be snbmitted at the next meeting. Mr Bates' motion was postponed.—Correspondence with the Minister of Education re Standard VII. wa9 referred to the came Committee. Native Schools.—The Minister for Education wrote on the question of the inspection of native schools by Board inspectors. He stated that although he would not press the inspectors to continue against their wißhcia to visit tho Maori schools, ho would bo very sorry to lose their services. He was of opinion that much good had resulted from these visits, The methods employed in the ordinary public schools of the colony and in these special schools in which the teaching was carried on in a foreign tongue, and with a view principally to the instruction of the pupils in that language, must necessarily be to some extent dissimilar, and the aim of the inspector might be in each case very different. However, if the Board's inspectors saw their way to communicate to the Department any conclusions they mighb come tc regarding the management or the method of teaching in" any school, they might be assured that their views would receive the fullest! consideration. —Tho letter was received".

Tendeks.—Tha Board received tenders for various school works. The following were accepted :—Aratapu: Painting the teacher's house, VV. S. Lee, £7. Auckland : Painting Napier-street School, D. Simpson, £39. Six tenders were received for tho last-named job, the highest being £57 17s. For painting the Nolson-streeb School ten tenders wore received, ranging frota £35 to £49 12a 6d. The tender of T. Longwiil, Eden Terrace, wa9 accepted, being the loweßfc. Nine tenders were received ior painting the school and teacher's house ab Maungatawhiri Valley, that of A. Findlay, £10 103, being accepted. The tender of T. H. Brown, £10 10s, was accepted for painting the school and teacher's house ab Kirikiriroa. Tenders for additions to teacher's house ab'Maketu were referred back to the architect. ',

Edkndale.—The Edendale School Comrait tee renewed their application for a school in this district, near Mount Eden. They had 70 children of school age than would attend.—The Chairman eaid that this matter should be taken with Mount Eden, as an application had been received from the latter school for an'addition to the school. He thoughb that, with regard to the latter application, there was ample room in the Morninirton and Mount Albert Schools. Instead of adding to the Mounb Eden School ib would be better to; build ab Edendale.—The matter was referred t6 the Committees interested. . v,; Hellyer'S; Creek.— An application'was received for the enlargement of the Hellyer's Creek (Birkdale) school.—lt was decided to enlarge the building after the winter S9aspp. Whakatake. — An application for the enlargement of the Whakatane school was deferred for six months. Beresford-street. — The Board _wenb into Committee to consider the question of appointment of first assistant to the Berea-ford-streec School, and decided that they cpujd nobappolnb Mr T, .;U.
