The Wellington Cup candidate Golden Plover won bhe Waipawa County Racing Club Handicap of lOOsova on New Year's Day with 9ab 41b in the saddle, Allan-a-dale (7st 101b) and Goosander (7ab 41b) occupying the obher places. The winner covered bhe mile and a-half in 2min 42£ sec.

Since the decision of the New Year's Day racing, bhe betting on the Wellington Cup has livened up considerably, although there is only one metallician in Wellington who has a straight-out book. Ib was thoughb that Mr Evetb would have penalised Lobtie and Mahaki to a greater extent than he did for their Auckland victories, and as soon as the re-handicapping appeared, both horses were well backed, and 5 to 1 is the besb offer againsb either. North Atlantic, too, is considered to have escaped lightly after his win in Napier. There is little money to be had about him even aba point longer than the favourites. Golden Plover was backed from the Tight quarter, ib is said, Borne time ago ab 100 tb 8, and there are enquiries for Westmere and Lady Zetland.
