The ordinary meeting of the Nowton Borough Council was held lasb evening, when the following business was transacted :— Shop Hours Bill. — Cr. Shackelford asked if any intimation had been received from the City Council relative to the Shop Hours Bill Conference. —The Mayor replied in the negative.—The Mayor was then elected to represent the borough at the Conference.—Cr. Davenporb thought the Council oughb to give an expression as to the moab euifcable day. He favoured Saturday, and said that from 1 o'clock to 7 o'clock on a Saturday afternoon he might as well, have his shop closed.— Cr. Shackeljord also spoke in favour of Saturday, de*pite three-eighths of his week's takings were taken on thab day.—Cr. Wilson spoke against Saturday, and pictured the hardjhip to small tradesmen with children dependent upon them. If Saturday waa taken from these people they might as well take them to the Costley Home ab once.— :Jr. Donald thought the public houses oughb so. be shut on Saturdays.—Cr. Holden favoured Saturday. — A vote was taken with the result that Saturday waa chosen As the mosb suitable day to close. Licenses.—Renewals of slaughter-house licenses was granted to Messrs Hellaby and R, Salmon. . Water Consumption.—The Acting Town Clerk reported that the water consumption lor the week onding December 17bh waa 331,000 gallons. Accounts.—Accounts amounting to £10 53 were passed for paymonb.
