CORRESPONDENCE.

THE WAIRARAPA AKD THE

FISH.

(To the Editor.)

Sib, As ao many notices have appeared in the papers on this question a lot of people seem to believe that our fish supply comes from the vicinity of Barrier, I may say tbab there ia nob a fifth coming to this markeb caugbb within forty miles of the wreck of the Wairarapa. I may also explain that there are two kinds oi echnapper in this gulf, the one known as "school" fish, and the other as inside or shallow water fish. The " school" fish are deepwater fish of fino quality, bub if tho distance from the wreck is nob enough to remove any doubt in people's minds I would advise them to use the email or inside, shallow water shnapper-^such as are caught around Rakino Island-^-as this kind never go oub into such deep water as we find around the Barrier. Ib is my opinion thab a echnapper would nob touch a human body, or any other kind of meat, unless it were fresh. The work of the scavenger is left to the lower forms of sea life thab are nob so highly developed as the schnapper. Ib is a well-known fact that schnapper will nob eat) their own flesh. The schnappor has attained to a step above cannibalism, or consuming decomposed material of any kind. Its nasal organs are too well developed to do the work of tfie scavenger. The schnapper is a clean and noble fi3h, equal in intelligence to many human beings.—l am, etc., A. Sanfobd;
