LOCAL GOVERNING BODIES.
At a meeting of the Westporb Harbour Board held on September 18th, Mr Coz t second officer of the s.s. Janet iNicoll, waa appointed Aseisbant-Harbourmaeter. Thera were 22 applicants. A letter was received from the Mokihinui Coal Company, offering to sell the Board their private line for £25,000. The Board unanimously resolved to urge the Government to purchase the line out of the Board's funds, or that tha Government make provision for the par* chase on the best possible tikms in parstt* ance of the- recommendation of the Rail* ways Committee of tho House. MrR. H. Reeves, a member of the. Board, goes to Wellington to urge this settlement on the Government. \ .
The municipalelectionson Sept. 13 for tha return of two councillors to fill seats on the Auckland City Council, resulted in tho election of Messrs W. B. White (Grafton), and W. J. Courtney (Ponsonby). When the poll closed at Ponsonby the result was announced as follows :— Wa j. Courtney ._ ... . 275 Joseph Beecroft ... — 236 Majority for Mr Courtney ... 39 . In the Graf ton Ward the election aroused much interest. The total votes recorded were 278 oub of 420 on the roll. The lady candidate, Mrs Endean, was, contrary to expectation, left ab tha bottom of the poll. The voting resulted :— Mr W.B. White ./. '*.. 115 Mr R. K. Garlick ... ... 98 MrGeo. fl. Powley ... ».. '53 Mrs Ellen Endean ... ... 10 Majority for Mr White 17.votes. Woman has triumphed in Parnell, aa in Onehunga, in connection with municipal elections. The election held in Parnell for the return of three members to fill vacant Beats on the Parnell Borough Council, resulted in Mrs Amelia Matßon heading the poll. Mrs Amelia Matson ... ,„ 244. Barclay... 49 Messrs Hutchison, Burden and McKenzi« are therefore elected. : A good deal of interest was manifested in the election of a member, for the South Ward in the Thames Borough Council, the candidates being Mr David Stewart, who is an old resident of the Thames, aDd Mr E. H. Taylor, who has twice stood for Parliamentary honours. The voting resulted :■— Stewart .- 83 Taylor 4?., The election of three Councillors! at Hamilton resulted:— E. T. Davoy ... ... ..* 67 ;: R. F. Sandes 64 John Bettley •' ... 61 Chas. Tippen 55 The first three were declared elected. The contest in the two Wards'of Dunedin excited considerable interest. Councillor McGregor defeated Mr A. H. Burton, by a majority of 134 for High Ward. Mr A. Morrison was elected for Bell Ward, pdllinf 165 more than Mr A. S. Adams. , .
