THE GOVERNMENT PROGRAMME.
Brisbane, this day. Mb Thos. Glassev, a former labour leaden bas been elected to represent Bnrke in the Legislative Assembly.' The Hon. Horace Tozer, Colonial Secretary, addressing his constituents, said it was certain the public account* for the year would almost balance. It was the intention of the Government to cot down defence expenditure and appoint colonials to positions hitherto filled by Imperial officers. The Government expected ultimately to abolish black labour by multiplying small farms in the sugar industry. They intended to make loans from the Savings Bank to farmers at low rates of interest. He said nothing had come of the land grant railways proposals, and he believed nothing would come, as the terms offered were not good enough to attract capitalists. The Government had determined nofc to place any more loans oa. the market.
