ATHLETIC SPORTS.

THE GARRETT BENEFIT,

We conclude our report of tbe results of the racing at the Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club's sports in the Domain on (Saturday afternoon, in aid of the fund for the relief of the widow and children of the Club's late President, Mr R. Garrett. There was a large attendance of spectators during the afternoon. No remarkably fast timo was made in the foot events or the bicycle races, the ground being heavy going owing to the recent raine. After we went to press on Saturday the following events were contested :—

76 Yards Handicap,—Barton won the run off. Time, 8 l-sth sec.

Drop-kicking.-—Messrs J. G. Lecky, W, S. Diokoy, C. Stone, W. Webber, H, Donald, F. E. N. Gaudin, T. B. O'Connor and J. A. Kallender, all well known footballers, contested this event, Tbe kicking, however, was very poor, which was attributed to the queer shaped ball used. J. A. Kallender secured the first prize wibh a kick which bravelled 47 yards 1 foob 6in. H. Donald was second with <\b yards 1 foob 9iin. T. B. Quarter-mile Hanoicap.—Roberts was tbe only man who came to tbe post. His time waa 64 4-sth ccc. One Mile Handicap.—A. E. Parker, 80yds, 1; M. O'Connor, 80yds, 2; W. Farquhar, scratch, 3. O'Connor led to the home turn, where Parker spurted, and won easily. Time, 4min 44s<_c. One Mile Bicycle Combination Race. —A. Coubrough, 1 ; G. Henning, 2; A. E. Smith, 3. This was an excellenb race, being very closely contested. Steeplechase Handicap.—This proved one of the most interesting events on the programme. Seven competitors started for the long and arduous journey. The obstacles were composed of hurdles, stone walls, hill climbing, while a very ugly jump in front of the pavilion was a hurdle decorated with furze. Goldwater was a sbtong favourite, and he, with Bow, led past tho pavilion for the firsb time at a very fasb pac6. Ab bhe stone wall adjoining the Chinamen's gardens, however, Goldwater came to grief, and Bow led up the hill in the outer Domain, with Barry, Noonan and O'Connor in close purBuib, while Dacre had gained considerably on his field. Bow maintained his advantage round the old block house, but Barry and Dacre bad overtaken some of their opponents. Bow led over the stonewall at the southeastern corner of the ground, and rounded the tree on the hill closely followed by Barry, O'Connor and Dacre. The runners came down tbe steep hill at a "break-neck" pace, bub Bow waa firsb over the hurdle whioh opened on to the course proper, and with only the gorse fence to negotiate bis victory waa loudly proclaimed. Bow, however, "baulked"' at bbc gorse fence, and Barry coming with a strong spurt cleared the obstacle with a fine effort, and beab Bow by about ten yards, while O'Connor and Dacre were also close up. The resulb was: P. Barry (18eeos), 1: E. C. Bow (30eecs), 2; M. O'Connor (lOsecs), 3; and A. Dacre (88ecs),4. Quarter-mile Scratch.—H. B. J. Bull, 1; W. C. Rhodes, 2. Quarter Mile Dribbling.-—T. Cantley, 1; H. Donald, 2;A. E. Smith, 3. Half-mile Bicycle, Cigar, .and Umbrella Race.—A, Coubrough, 1 ; H. J. Schmidt, 2; A. J. Simmelhag, 3. Quarter Milk Handicap.—H.B. J. Ball, eoratch, 1; G. S. Frost, 14yds, 2; A. P, John eon, 10yds, 3. Time, 66sec.,

Three mile Bicycle Handicap. —■ J. Selby. 300 yds, 1 j A. E. Smith, 210 yds, 2 ; W. W. Phipps, 320 yds, 2. Time, 9min 32 3-stb sec.

Committeemen's Race.—A bicycle contest bebween the Committeemen was won by R. Logan ; H. Nicholson being second, and Winks third.

600 Yds Teams? Race. — Three teams entered for this event, Cisy,* Newton and Grafton Football Clubs. The Grafton men secured first and third places. The race resulted in the Graftonitea gaining 12 points, Newton 3, and City nil. The contestants finished in the following order:— A. Jones (Grafton), 5 points, 1; G. Warner (Grafton), 4 points, 2; G. A. Bradburn (Newton) 3 points, 3; G. S. Frosb (Grafton), 2 points, 4; and W. E. Young (Grafbon), 1 poinb, 5.
