COUNCIL MEETING

THE NEW PROFESSORS.

A meeting of the Auckland University College Council was held yesterday afternoon, there being present:—Dr. Mackellar (acting-chairman), Miss Edgor, Messrs Gerald Peacocke, Jackson Palmer, J. Dilworth, J. J. Holland (Mayor of Auckland), R. Udy.

Ib being intimated that Messrs Egerton and Segar, the two new professors of the College, who had arrived from England on the previous day, and also Professor Tubbs, were desirous of meeting the Council, a message was sent to thoso gentlemen asking thorn to wait on tha Council before the ordinary business was commenced. The professors were then introduced by Professor Brown. The Chairman welcomed Messrs Tubb?, Egerton, and Segar on behalf of the Council, and said he hoped tbab they would find Auckland a much more pleasant place than it had been in the past. The professors replied that it gave them great pleasure to meeb the Council. After consulting with Professors Segar and Egorbon, the Chairman stated bhab those gentlemen had suggested that for the present, in the matter ot a time-table, they should follow the lineH of the lectures given by the previous professors of mathematics and English. It was agreed that in the meantime this arrangement would be sufficient, and it was decided that the professors should ebarb work at once, the dates of the opening lectures to bo notified in the newspapers. Proceeding with the ordinary business, a question arose as to the necessity of roofing the portion of roof of bho University Buildings damaged by a recenb fire. Ib was decided to accept an offer made by Mr R. Farrell to repair the damage in question, and re-roof the building, for the sum of £28 17e 6d, JMr Holland being requested to supervise the work. Loave of absence was granted bo Bishop Cowie and the Roy. Mr Williams. Mr Montalk wrote requesting the Council to accept several French works for the College library, and bhe donation was accepted. The Mayor stated thab the Governor, Lord Glasgow, had given permission for the students of the Auckland 'University College and of the College and Grammar School to use the paddock ab the back of Government House for football during the coming season. It was decided to thank Lord Glaseow for bhe concession. On the motion of Dr. Mackellar, ib was decided to sanction a change in Professor Brown's time-bable, made in order to suit the convenience of a number ot students who could only attend in the evening.
