BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING

At the ordinary and special meetings ot the Birkenhead Borough Council, held on the 26th inst., all members were present, tUe Mayor presiding. After confirming the minutes of meetings held on 22nd and 29th March sundry alterations being initialled in the valuation Hat And ratepayers' roll and the latter duly signed and the estimates for the current year's receipts and expenditure being approved the following rates for the same period were levied in accordance with resolutions passed at previous meeting: — lab, A general rate of fifteenpence in the £; 2nd, a separate rate of fourpence in the £ to meet the Government loan debentures ; and 3rd, a special of twopence in the £ for the borough's liability to the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, each to be payable on the 14th of May next ensuing. Financially, the Treasurer presented the annual balance-sheet to Slab March, which had been prepared for audit, showing the total receipts for the year bo have been £429 5s 9d, and expenditure £522 7s 2d, leaving a debit balance of £93 Is Sd, since which date £100 had been received from the Government towards the damage caused by recent land-slips, and £3 11s 3d for rates. Thab accounts amounting to £119 14s 2d had been paid, and others to the extent of £87 16 8d authorised for payment as funds were available from incoming rates. Further accounts amounting to £21 la 6d were also approved. The engineer, Mr Hammond, submitted a plan and specifications for further improvments to the foot path leading up from the wharf, towards which several contributions had been promised, and for filling in to meet the retaining wall now being erected by the Harbour Board, which plans, etc., were presented as the engineer's contribution. The thanks of the Council were voted to Mr Hammond for the same, and to Mr Witheford for the assistance which he had obtained from the Harbour Board. A Committee was appointed to carry out the said work by inviting and accepting tenders for ita performance.
