REV. MR HABENS ASSAULTED,

THE ASSAILANT ARRESTED.

Wellington, this day. Great excitement was caused (says yesterday's " Post ") in the Government Buildings about a quarter past two this afternoon by the conduct of Isaiah Fake, a well-known plasterer. Fake, ib appears, had a son (Ernest), who was committed by the Wellington Magistrate^ Court to the Caversham Industrial School two or three years ago. A shorb time ago the lad was pub to service with Mr Wm. Evans, a farmer at Obipiri Flab, Wyndham, Otago. This afternoon Fake received a tolegraja thab his eon had been drowned, and he at once procaeded to the Government Buildings. Rushing into the offices of the Education Department he caught hold of the Rev. W. J. Habens, Inspector-General of Schools, by the collar and tie and shook him savagely, at the same time accusing thab gentleman ot being responsible for the death of his boy. Mr Smithers and Mr R. Pope, who were in the next office, hearing sounds of a scuffle in Mr Habens1 room, rushed to their chief a aßsistance, and alter considerable trouble they succeeded in ejecting Fake, .bake kept calling ab tho top of his voice, and in a few moments scores of Civil servants, attracted by the noise, congregated outside the Education »ep»rtment Offices. Fake, who was accompanied by one ot his sons, made several lunges at Mr bmitbers, who dodged the blows, one of which, however, struck a bystander. Fake, seeing a representative of tho " Evening- Post in the passage appealed to him to take a note of the proceedings. Alter makm? this request he lay down on a table near the nroplace in the passage, and gave vent to toars. In a few moments a constable arrived on the scene, and, with some assistance he succeeded in getting Fake to the police station. Fake was brought up'at the Magihtrato's Court on a chartre of having done actual bodily harm to Mr Habens, and was remanded till Monday next, bail being retused.
