THE LICENSING ELECTIONS.
(To the Editor.)
Sir ( As bhe licensing elections will take • place to-morrow, so far as Auckland is con> , cerned. I am suro all tho temperance party are prepared tb vote for a decrease in the, number of licensed houses. It, would be no \ use in voting for prohibition at this time, as I believe the Churches are bco lethargic on bhab matter. I hope the members of bhe Orauire Associabion, whose principles incuL cate temperance, and whose lodges are almost all temperance lodges, will vote for 'the decrease ot the liquor traffic. In fact, I would ask them to vote and use their influence in that direction, so that the cause which now darkens our sky shall soon ba scattered by the golden beams of brubh and temperance.
-I am, etc., J. Carnahan.
(To bha Editor.)
Sir, With your kind permission I would like to say a word re above. I hope thab the idea thab mauy will nob vote at the forthcoming election is untrue, as I think it is. The women at any rate will again, I believe, prove themselves worthy of the enfranchment which is theirs. As to the prohibition vote I am sorry to say I do nob think bhe people are ready for ib, bub when thoy are, we shall havo ib. As regards reduction, surely bhe trade itself would* be glad to see less hotels. As you yourself at the lasb election urged upon every man and woman to voto (no matter how they voted) and as no one can question the power you command in your valuable papor, I hope to see you do the same again.
—I am, etc., Eliza Cullings.
