PROFESSOR OF MATHEMATICS
APPOINTED
CLASSICAL PROFESSORSHIP AC-
CEPTED BY MR TUBBS.
We intimated in our last issue that the members of the University College Council had determined "to oiler the classical professorship of the Auckland University College to Mr Tubbs, assistant to Prot'eeßor Tucker, at the Melbourne University, and subsequently a cablegram was forwarded to that, gentleman's address at Melbourne :to that eflect. To-day Mr Tubbs wired accepting the classical professorship, and asked •to be intimated when the term begins. . . ' To-day, Sir Maurice O'Rorke, chairman of the Univereity Council, received the following telegram, notifying the appointment of Mr Johnston, a Sixth Wrangler as Professor of Mathematics: — " To Sir Maurice O'Korke.—The Premier has just received the following from the Agent-General:—' Mathematics Commission recommend Johnston, Sixth Wrangler, 82,.'"—(Signed) Alex. Wells, Secretary to the Cabinet. Mr A. R. Johnston was formerly, Fellow ab St. John's, Cambridge, and waß Sixth Wrangler at the Mathematical Tripos in JBB2. These appointments, with thatof Mr C. W. Egerton, us Professor of Englißb, completes thfl University professorial stafl, arid effectually disposes ot the prediction mado in certain quarters that difficulty would be experienced in filling these vacancies. Each of the professors appointed are evidently men of high standing in their profeu3ion, and the University is to be congratulated on the successful issue of their negotiations.
