Wellington, this day. The City Surveyor has drawn the Councils attention to the enormous consumption of water within the city. The quantity used for all purposes, inclusive of electric lighting, is five million gallons in 24 hours, or an average of over 150 gallons per head of population. It is said that unless this undue consumption is checked it will soon be necessary to incur a very large expenditure to increase the water supply. The Council will consider the best method in which waste may be checked. Mr W. L. Travers succeeds the late M. Loatalot de Bachone as Vice Consul for France in New Zealand. A shipment of big guns is to be sent borne forthwith, the Agent-General having wired that Armstrong and Co. can chasehoop them immediately on arrival. New offices for the Public Trust Office are to be erected on grounds adjoining the Government Buildings, and will face the Supreme Court. At 8.b5 this morning the Terranorapicked Up the South Island end of the broken cable, and was in communication with White's Bay station. A circular has been issued to heads of departments in the Civil Service, instructing them to stop all overtime in future, except when despatch is required in circumstances of a confidental nature. Extra clerks will be temporarily employed when required. The Customs returns for January, exclusive of Auckland, Kaipara, Patea and Picton, which are not available, amount to £109,923. The complete returns will compare most favourably with those of January, 1893.
